SIM lock:

A sim-lock, NETWORK-LOCK, Carrier-Lock, IMEI-Lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical limitation built into GSM and CDMA mobile phone devices by manufacturers for use by carrier networks to limit using these phones to specific locations and/or networks. This is contrary to a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not impose any SIM restrictions.SIM locking is really common if subsidized phones are sold with pay as you go contracts. It is really important to note, however, that this technology linked with the cellphone needs to be compatible with the systems being utilized by the network carrier. A GSM cellular phone is only going to function with a GSM carrier and are not going to work on a CDMA network. In a similar fashion, a CDMA cellphone will only work with a CDMA service and won't work on a GSM service. Take note that more modern (2013 and newer) advanced cell phones are capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM technologies, making it possible for users to use their mobiles on almost any network.

Unlocking Technology:

A handset can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the network operator. Different mechanisms consist of software working on the device or a pc attached to the phone, hardware devices that connect to the device or over-the-air by the carrier. More often than not the unlock process is permanent. The code needed to remove all locks from a cellphone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the phone is network locked it will typically display one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

Device companies have financial incentives both to bolster SIM lock protection (which placates service organisations and will allow exclusivity deals) and then to weaken it (broadening a phone's allure to users that may not be interested in the provider that offers it). Additionally, making it very hard to unlock a phone might possibly make it considerably less attractive to mobile phone network service providers with a legal duty to provide unlock codes for some devices or in selected countries.

Unlocking Services:

A certain amount of companies provide a carrier smartphone unlocking service . This service requires all those that would like to unlock a device to provide their IMEI number to a service supplier and often they will also require the country and cellular network the phone is locked to, sometimes sent by email or submitted on their web site. The supplier will then supply (at a cost to you) an unlock code for the handset.

Unlocking Service Providers:

Regrettably there are a lot of scammers on-line retailers active in the smart-phone unlocking industry. As a result it pays to make sure you use a honest service provider for these services. Take the necessary precautions and investigate all prospective dealers in advance of committing to place an order. In the case of on-line providers, make certain they document their official business name and matching registration information (all legitimate business has to be lawfully registered with the official authorities in their country of origin) and make sure they supply a genuine registered address and contact details on their website. Also make sure that any payments made are by legitimate methods for instance a recognised bank or financial institution using a debt or credit card, but never ever make payment via a direct transfer since this provides no fiancial security. To aid with the search for a trustworthy service provider, we've provided a listing just below (and in no particular order) of a number of legitimate organisations currently offering such services.
