Portal 2 has been crowned the ultimate game of the year at the Golden Joystick video game awards.

It beat the competition for the top prize, which included Gran Turismo 5, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and LA Noire.

With more than two million votes cast across 14 categories, organisers claim it is the biggest video games award ceremony in the world.

However this year, with no game winning more than one award, there was no particular standout title.

Angry Birds has continued its seemingly unstoppable rise up the ranks of smartphone gaming with the best mobile award in Rio for its Rio edition.

Call of Duty: Black Ops was the biggest seller of the past 12 months. It received only one award, best shot, and it was a quiet ceremony, according to series standards.

FIFA 11 came out on top in the best sports category, beating Pro Evolution Soccer. Gaming

Portal 2 was the big winner at these awards. It's a first-person puzzle-platform platform game where players must navigate through a series rooms using a special gun that creates portals.

The game's humor has been also praised, with Stephen Merchant from The Office and Extras providing the voice of one of the characters.

Sonic is 'honoured'

The second most significant prize is probably the one you should be watching. It went to Elder Scrolls V. Skyrim. This is good news for its makers as it will be released next month.

Sonic The Hedgehog took home the Outstanding Contribution Gong. He is celebrating twenty years since Sega unveiled him.

David Corless, Sonic brand director, said the hedgehog was a timeless character who had transcended video games and whose appeal had been extended by the boom in smartphone gaming.

"It's rare that TV or cartoons are able to endure for so long. Even in a video game it's quite rare.

"It's amazing that Sonic is still alive and doing as well as he does, which is a testament to the little blue blur we call him."

Mr Corless stated that Sonic's old rivalry against Nintendo's Mario was gone. Gaming

"It was a Blur versus Oasis thing about 10 or 15 years ago, but they recently joined forces and appeared in some games together.

He laughed and said, "We've put all these dark days behind us."
