Following Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition has been running as is. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system, but Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island until the present. Java Edition will soon require the use of a Microsoft account to play and you'll also be getting an exclusive cape for your issues.

In the early 2021s In the beginning of 2021, you'll have to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system. Mojang claims that this is to introduce two-factor authentication to increase security. However, it will also permit better parental controls, chat blocking and invitation blocking as well as integration of accounts with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Mojang has no plans to change Minecraft mods or PvP. Java and Bedrock will remain distinct games. You'll be able to keep using your existing Java username, however in the event that you're creating an account with a Microsoft account for the first time, you might have to change the usernames of your accounts. If you already have a Microsoft account then you'll be able merge your Minecraft login right away.

Mojang offers the cape, which was once the most exclusive Java Edition item: to ease the transition. Fake It Till You Make It Participating in the migration will provide you with a cape for free. While it won't have the Minecon exclusive designs, it will let everyone feel a bit royal.

Although nothing is likely to change, players still have concerns. For instance, the more restrictive terms of service by Microsoft could lead to bans, which could result in some players being banned from accessing Minecraft.

Further details can be found in the official announcement and FAQ. We'll see how it shakes out in early 2021.
